1987 Library HistoryAt the January meeting of the Board of Trustees a motion was passed to formally create the new positions of Head, Adult Services and Head, Children’s Services. Elaine Goldberg was appointed as the former and Renee Romance as the latter.
During the first year of the newly expanded building the storytimes, book reviews, stuffed pet show, Art Rental Gallery, Sunday afternoon “Arts Alive in Liverpool” music concerts, craft classes, and Saturday afternoon films continued to prevail. Once a month on a Sunday afternoon Director Fay Golden held a meeting of the “Mystery Readers Anonymous” in her office. Poetry reading programs were held as part of a grant received from the Poets and Writers, Inc. and the Literature Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. Thursday afternoons the “Armchair Traveler” offered films on places to visit around the world.
April was designated Dinosaur month in the Children’s Room and T-Rex, the talking dinosaur, stood at the entryway to the picture book area. Children who walked directly up to the five foot dinosaur would stand on a mat which activated the prerecorded message.
On April 8th district residents approved the library’s budget proposition by a margin of 207 votes (1034 yes and 827 no). The new budgeted amount would be $1.3 million. In the Trustee election Genevieve Pieniazek was reelected and Joseph Ostuni, Jr. was elected to a five year term replacing Sharon Fulmer.
On Wednesday April 15th the library remained open until 11:30 p.m. for the convenience of last minute income tax filers. Photocopiers were operative and forms were available, but no materials could be checked out. Director Fay Golden, along with Elaine Goldberg, Head of Adult Services, and Security person Mike Burg were on hand to greet those who took advantage of the library’s late hours.
Leanne Cook joined the librarian staff on May 4th She was assigned to the Audio Visual Department to select, order and catalog videos, maps and equipment.
The new ComputerWorks Lab was dedicated on Saturday May 9. Assemblyman Michael Bragman was the guest speaker. The lab contained a desktop publishing area, a laser printer, a synthesizer, and Apple, Commodore and Panasonic computers. Circulating software for the Atari, Commodore, IBM and Apple were available to patrons. In late October scanning services were offered. According to a report written by Jean Polly, during its first ten months of operation the lab logged over 7000 hours of free computer use. Over half of the time the computers were used by adults.
When the computer in Pascal Place was relocated to the Lab, the System 80 tutorial equipment and materials were placed in the small study room. They proved to be popular with parents as well as tutors.
At the May Board meeting Director Fay Golden reported that she had received numerous complaints from patrons regarding the presence of traffic controlling stanchions in front of the Circulation Desk. It was agreed that they be removed and only used during very peak times.
In June the 16th annual Art in the Park was moved to Onondaga Lake Park as part of the Waterfront Extravaganza sponsored by Onondaga County Parks and Recreation.
In July the Board received the resignation of Dr. N. Donald Boink who was moving out of the Syracuse area. The Board approved the hiring of part time maintenance worker, Rodney (Porky) Muench.
Yvette Hewitt, clerk in the Children’s Department, announced the implementation of a Library Birthday Club. A child could invite two times the age he was going to be, i.e. a six year old could have twelve guests. There will be a cake, a story and time to select books.
At a special ceremony in the library in July Renee Romance and Dorothy Morgan received Merit awards for the year 1986. Virginia Henderson received the Performance Award.
In August the Board appointed Dr. James Klaiber to fill the position vacated by Dr. Boink. It should be noted here that the August Board minutes were typed on a computer for the first time!
On September 3rd the Armchair Traveler Film Series began.
At the November meeting the Board approved the purchase of television production equipment. Funding sources were State Aid and a grant from Assemblyman Michael Bragman. The equipment was to be housed on the second floor under the direction of Richard Fensterer.
Reference service continued to flourish as librarians responded to 38,871 queries from patrons who either called in or visited the library. This figure was an eighty three per cent increase from seven years ago!
