Adults and Teens
Liverpool Public Library has offered public access computers since 1981. We started with an Apple II+ computer in our children's room. Today, we offer the following computer resources to our users:
Computers in the Adult Area
11 DELL PC INTERNET BROWSER COMPUTERS
Nine of these computers are reserved for 30 minute time blocks. The other two are reserved for short 15 minute stand-up appointments. The internet browser computers are equipped with USB ports to allow patrons to save documents to USB flash drives. Software available on these Windows 10 PCs includes Microsoft Office 2016 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher), Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox web browsers.
2 DELL PC "WORKSTATION LITE" COMPUTERS
In addition to the capabilities of the Internet browser computers listed above, these Windows 10 computers have iTunes. To read CDs or view DVDs, borrow an external drive from the Circulation Desk. You can reserve the Workstation Lite PCs for 60 minutes.
2 APPLE IMAC QUICKSCAN COMPUTERS
In addition to the capabilities of the Internet browser computers listed above, these computers have iTunes, have the ability to read and burn CD/DVD media, and have a ScanSnap attached for quick document scanning. You can reserve the iMac computers for 90 minutes.
5 DELL PC QUIET ZONE WORKSTATION COMPUTERS
Five Dell PC Internet computers are available for 90 minute appointments. These Windows 7 computers are equipped with USB ports to allow patrons to save documents to USB flash drives. Software available includes Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox web browsers. Because these computers are in the Quiet Zone at the back of the library, patrons are not permitted to work together on these computers.
1 DELL PC WORKSTATION WITH FLAT-BED SCANNER
A Dell PC with flat-bed scanner attached is available for 90 minute appointments. This Windows 7 computer has the same software and capabilities as the Quiet Zone workstations, plus photo scanning and processing software (PhotoShop Elements) and ABBYY FineReader for scanning documents.
1 APPLE IMAC COMPUTER, WITH FLAT-BED SCANNER
This Apple iMac Internet computer is available for 90 minute appointments. This computer features Microsoft Office software for word processing, Adobe Creative Suite software for photo scanning and digital imaging, CD/DVD burning, page layout, and more. USB ports are available for saving documents to USB flash drives
Since the workstation computers are often busy, it's best to reserve ahead of time. Not all computers have the same hardware and software setup.
AFTERSCHOOL EDGE BY AWE COMPUTER
The AfterSchool Edge computer is designed for children ages 6 - 12. It contains educational software, games, and activities that appeal to elementary school students. It can be used by persons of any age. It does not have internet access. Ask for a pass at the Information Desk in the Adult Area.
3 APPLE IMAC LAPTOPS
Three Apple Mac laptop computers with Internet capabilities are available for 60 minute appointments. These computers have the same software as the Apple iMac (see above). Internet browsers include Safari, Firefox, and Google Chrome. Websites with fun kids games are bookmarked on the desktop. To reserve one of these, use the PC Reservation station in the library, selecting "Mac Laptop In-house" and take the PC Reservation slip to the Circulation Desk. You must leave a valid New York State Drivers License or NYS-issued non-Drivers ID at the Circulation Desk when using one of these laptops.
HP CHROMEBOOKS, 14-INCH, 1 DAY LOAN
Need to use a library computer for more than 3 hours? Use your library card to check out an HP Chromebook for a 1-day loan period. Use in the library, or take it with you and return it the next day. If you take it home, you will need to have WiFi at home to use it.
A Dell PC is available for tutoring and testing in our Collaborative Learning Center. We offer volunteer tutors to help you master the basics. Please call 457-0310 ext. 150 to make an appointment with a tutor for one-on-one instruction. This workstation is also available for patrons who need to take computer administered tests for coursework delivered by distance learning. Skype software is installed and a webcam with microphone is available for patrons who wish to conduct a video conference.
Printing and Scanning
All of the computers in the adult area have the ability to print in black and white or color. Printing costs are $.10 per page for black and white and $.50 per page for color, payable with either coin, or paper currency ($1, $5, $10) when the page is printed. Pages waiting to be printed are stored on a print release station and unpaid or abandoned print jobs are automatically deleted after six hours.
You can reserve computer time in person or over the telephone by calling 457-0310. Walk in reservations can also be made at the PC reservation station at the library. The Collaborative Learning Center is reserved by using the D!BS system. When you call, please let us know what it is that you need to do so we can assign you the computer or workstation with the appropriate capability.
